In a laudable gesture, Hatton National Bank (HNB) rewarded students who excelled at the Year 5 Scholarship examination conducted by the Department of Examinations, at a special felicitation ceremony held at HNB Towers in Colombo recently.
Under this Year 5 Scholarship Scheme initiated by HNB in 2012, children who maintained a minimum balance of Rs. 10,000 in a HNB Singithi Lama Account prior the examination will qualify for attractive cash awards if they emerge as the highest scorers on a district basis. In addition, the all-island high-flyer wins the coveted top scholarship award of Rs. 300,000.
At the 2013 felicitation ceremony, Master Sandaru Thathsara Balahewa, a student of G/Mahinda Vidyalaya, Galle, the all-island top scorer at the Year 5 Scholarship examination, was awarded with a scholarship worth Rs. 300,000.
The three students honored as the second best achievers and awarded scholarships valued at Rs. 200,000 each were Miss. M. K. J. Vidulanka Munasinghe of KG/Bandaranayake Kanishta Vidyalaya, Hettimulla, Master G. D. H. Chanuka Dharmarathna of Karagastalawa Vidyalaya, Belihuloya and Miss M. K. Gimhani Malaviarachchi of Godagama Subharathi Mahamathya Maha Vidyalaya, Godagama.
In addition, winners who ranked amongst the Top 20 in their respective districts were awarded Rs. 20,000 each. In its totality, 175 HNB Singithi Lama Account holders who sat for this examination in 2013 from all 25 districts, including the North and the East, were felicitated at this event, where Mr. Piyal Hennayake, DGM - Services, Mr Lasantha Fernando, DGM Recoveries & Credit Quality Management, Mr R M P Dayawansa, AGM - Personal Financial Services, Mr Nilam Jumat, AGM - Trade & International, Mr Rohan Thambirajah, AGM - Network Management, Mrs Chiranthi Cooray, AGM - Human Resources and Mr Ruwan Manatunga, Chief Strategy Officer of HNB. All Island winners were accorded a warm welcome, garlanded and taken in a procession with the members of HNB Corporate Management team under a comprehensive program to recognize and reward their indefatigable efforts, which brought singular honor and fame not only to themselves, but to their schools and the staff teachers as well.
With the objective of facilitating students facing the Year 5 Scholarship examination, HNB conducted a series of educational guidance programs. Under this initiative, model question papers prepared by a renowned panel of educationists were issued to Singithi Lama Account holders. These papers were designed in Sinhala & Tamil languages and consisted 20 model papers with answer scripts. The parents of students billed to sit for the examination in 2014 can open a Singithi Lama Account on behalf of their child and maintain a minimum balance of Rs. 10,000 to qualify for the scholarship awards to top scorers. An account can be opened with a minimum deposit of Rs. 500
Among the many features and benefits of this unique account are a range of gifts based on the existing account balance, loans for purchase of computers, scholarships up to a value of Rs. 7 million and an opportunity to enter the Pathum Vimana Draw. In addition, children enjoy an added 1 per cent interest above the general savings rate.
At the forefront of promoting programs in the sphere of education, HNB continues to champion a number of initiatives designed to boost skills and further educational pursuits among children across the island through its homegrown Nana Pubuduwa initiative.
Since 2005 HNB's many CSR initiatives include establishing libraries in schools, particularly those in disadvantaged, rural areas, which now number 199, promoting IT-based learning environments through provision of computers to selected schools and renovation of existing infrastructure as well as donation of books, furniture and equipment.
