

Among private sector banks, HNB sets the pace when it comes to development banking. The Bank's Development Division, established in the late 1970s, accommodates SME, agriculture and micro financing. HNB was Sri Lanka's foremost commercial bank to employ trained technical and agricultural staff to aid in these divisions.
Nearly all credit lines financed by the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, International Fund for Agricultural Development, Japanese Bank for International Cooperation as well as the concessionary credit lines occasionally started by the Sri Lankan Government, have seen the Bank as an engaged 'Participating Credit Institution'.
The Bank introduced the micro financing programme 'Gami Pubuduwa' (village awakening) in 1989 with the aim of offering financial services to self-employment initiatives and other micro enterprises in the rural community.
In order to provide assistance to businesses interested in acquiring equipment to decrease unsafe emissions and waste generation, monitor pollutants and improve work place security, as well as amenities to lower energy use and exposure of workforce to toxic materials, sound pollution, HNB offers loans up to Rs. 20 Mn at 8.75%.
